Between Dream and Reality. An Invitation to Feel...

Painting has been a quiet yet constant companion in Julija Jerkovic's life since childhood.

What began as an intuitive form of expression gradually evolved into a conscious artistic language—one that gives shape to what cannot always be put into words. During five years of  art education, she developed both her technical skills and her sensitivity to composition, color, and emotional expression.

Working primarily with acrylic on canvas, Julija creates paintings that exist somewhere between reality and dreams. Her work combines realistic imagery with surreal symbolism, inviting viewers into worlds where emotion and imagination intertwine. Recurring motifs, such as clouds with eyes and the North Star, are more than visual elements—they serve as silent guides, observers, and symbols of inner direction.

Growing up as the child of migrants in Austria, the artist has always lived between two cultures. Her parents fled the former Yugoslavia, bringing with them their language, memories, and history. Raised bilingually, she spent her summers with family in Croatia and Serbia, learning from an early age what it means to belong to two worlds while never fully belonging to either. This in-between space continues to shape her artistic perspective.

The North Star became a meaningful symbol during the long family journeys to the south. In the darkness, it offered constancy and orientation—a quiet reminder of belonging, longing, and inner guidance. Today, it frequently appears in her paintings alongside the clouds with eyes, representing both the feeling of being seen and the act of observing the world within and around us.

Her work explores the many dimensions of life: pain and beauty, loss and hope, identity and transformation. While each painting carries a deeply personal meaning, the artist intentionally leaves space for interpretation. Rather than offering definitive answers, she invites viewers to discover their own reflections within the symbolism—something that resonates on a deeply personal level.

After graduating from art school, Julija chose to study Sociology, driven by a fascination with society, identity, and human connection. Yet art never left her heart. Today, she follows that inner calling with intention. From her studio, she transforms the whispers of her heart into paintings, hoping they inspire others to hear a voice of their own.
